Cosmetic filler syringes
Fillers are cosmetic products that are injected either in the skin or in one of the facial layers under the skin (see the anatomical layers of the face) to restore volume, correct lines and wrinkles, or enhance facial features.

All the fillers –
  • share the treatment method: they are injected from a syringe with either a needle or a canula. The treatment does not include any surgical cutting and is considered minimally invasive;
  • do not require general or local anesthesia (possibly, topical numbing only);
  • have no downtime except for some rare and only minor redness, swelling and bruising ;
  • with most fillers, the results are immediate.

Notes and Explanations

* From numerous observations by patients and medical professionals, repeat treatments result in longer duration compared to the initial injections. After your second or third treatment, that same filler in the same area may now last up to 12-36 months (versus the original 4 to 24 months) (Smith SR; 2010)

** None/rare side effects - with all injections of Hyaluronic Acid fillers some minor redness, swelling and minor bruising sometimes occur. They go away on their own within several days.

NLF - nasolabial fold (nose to mouth fold)

Hydrophilic - attracts water. It is possible that after an injection, depending on how well hydrated you are or depending on the water retention level in your body on a given day, the injection area will look bigger or smaller. This effect of varying size and prominence is particularly undesirable in the lips and under the eyes.

BDDE stands for 1,4-butanediol diglycidyl ether. In the majority of the hyaluronic fillers in Europe and all the hyaluronic fillers approved in the USA, the molecules of the HA in the filler gel are cross-linked with BDDE. Free, unlinked HA molecules would be metabolized by the body fast. Cross-linking is necessary to make the HA filler gels last longer.

Syringe size/volume - cc is the same as ml (1 cc is the same volume as 1 ml)

Dermal filler is actually a misnomer as fillers may be placed in different layers of the face (see the facial anatomy layers here) depending on the corrected problem, technique and the type of filler.

More about different filler families

Juvederm's Vycross technology, which combines longer HA chains having a high molecular weight with shorter chains that have a lower molecular weight. This is unlike the earlier generation of fillers by Allergan, regular Juvederm, where the cross-linked HA chains were of uniform molecular weight.

Older Restylane products rely on higher G Prime and particle size to achieve higher lift. These products are based on HA particle dimension, which is established through a sizing process during the division of the gel.
The two new Restylane products - Restylane Defyne and Restylane Refyne - use XpresHAn technology of cross-linking the molecules of Hyaluronic acid. XpresHAn creates a smooth gels that allows maintaining natural movement and expression.

CPDM - Cohesive Polydensified Matrix is a technology patented by Merz and used to create their Belotero range of Hyaluronic Acid fillers. CPDM produces a very homogenous soft-flowing gel that should allow a more even integration into a facial tissue, which leads to favorable esthetic results (Kuhne U., 2016).

All fillers are good for hands, even though the only one officially approved for the hands in the USA is Radiesse. The injection technique is what makes the difference. HA fillers will provide temporary volume and hydration. Radiesse will stimulate long-term collagen production.
